Your Guide to Riding Transit with Pets

Our pets are our best friends, and we want to bring them along for all our adventures.

Lucky for Fido, most transit systems in the DC Metropolitan area allow pets, with one simple guideline. According to the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), “a pet may be transported on Metrorail and Metrobus, provided it is carried aboard in a secure container from which it cannot escape.”

However, it’s important to review each service’s specific rules before you hop on transit with your pet. We’ve collected them all so you can be prepared when you need to take your dog (or cat) to the vet, a friend’s house, doggie daycare or out for an adventure without your car.

All Pets Aboard

The following transit systems in the DC region allow small animals (dogs and cats) in secure carriers:

Service Animals Only

The following bus systems only allow service animals on board. Service animals do not need to be confined to secure carriers and must be wearing harnesses with proper identification.

Other Options

If you’re nervous about taking your pet on transit, there are other options that can help you reach your destination easily without a car. Uber has a special service, called Uber Pet. Lyft leaves it up to the driver to determine if they will take a pet in the car (service animals are always allowed). If you’re unsure or have a unique situation, such as traveling with multiple pets or without a carrier, it’s always best to call your driver ahead to avoid a canceled trip.

Biking with your furry friend allows them to still enjoy the outdoors while you take them for a farther ride than your regular walks. A simple addition like a bike trailer can make it easy and safe to tote your pet around town or a cargo bike can carry your dog, supplies and much more.
