Zipcar is coming to West Alex on Friday, December 1!
For a limited time, West Alex will waive application and membership fees for residents and employees of West Alex.
Here’s everything you need to know about Zipcar and how to get started:
What is Zipcar?
Zipcar is a carshare service that allows users with a valid driver’s license to book their vehicle for single trips when you need it, eliminating many of the costs of car ownership. You don’t even need to pay for the gas!
How much does a single trip cost?
Zipcar trips can be booked at an hourly or daily rate, with reduced rates for members. Go West Alex will waive the application and membership fees for residents and employees at West Alex, bringing your base rate down to just $10/hour or $83/day. The hourly and daily rates include your fuel and insurance, making that the total cost.
How do I request a fee-waiver code?
To get started with Zipcar and receive a fee-waiver code from Go West Alex, complete the form at the link below with your name, email address, and information about where you live or work at West Alex. We’ll respond within three (3) business days with your fee-waiver code and instructions on how to redeem your membership.
How do I book a trip?
To book a trip, sign up for your Zipcar membership with your fee-waiver code from Go West Alex and download the mobile app. Once your membership is approved, enter your address to select the Zipcar at West Alex, and enter your pickup and return times to check availability. Important trip coming up? You can reserve your trip up to a week in advance!
Why do I need to apply for membership?
Zipcar requires an application to verify your status as a licensed driver and check your driving record since you’ll be covered by Zipcar’s insurance while using their vehicle. While traffic violations or accidents don’t mean you’ll be denied membership, you may be charged a higher rate for insurance purposes.
How many miles can I drive during my trip?
Regardless of the duration of your drive, 180 miles per day are included in most membership plans. You are able to drive more than 180 miles for an overage charge of $0.58 per mile.
Where can I end my trip?
You can take a Zipcar wherever you please but you’ll be charged by the hour or day until the Zipcar is returned to its parking space on Berkeley Street. You cannot end your trip at another Zipcar parking space.
Is fuel included in the rate?
Yes – fuel is included in the hourly and daily rates! There is a free gas card located in the sun visor over the driver’s seat of every vehicle. When filling up, use the gas card as you would any credit or debit card. Be sure to return the vehicle with at least ¼ of a tank to avoid any additional fees (and avoid messing up the next driver’s schedule).
What insurance coverage does Zipcar provide?
Members in good standing are covered by Zipcar physical damage insurance. If you get in an accident during your trip, you’re only required to cover a $1,000 damage fee. The damage fee can be reduced or eliminated with damage protection coverage that you can purchase for an additional fee. Zipcar insurance also includes secondary third-party liability coverage and, where required, Personal Injury Protection (PIP) or “no-fault” coverage.
How do I contact Zipcar?
If you arrive at your booked time and the vehicle is damaged or in the event of an accident or breakdown during your trip, contact Zipcar by calling 866-4ZIPCAR (1-866-494-7227). Phone support is available 24/7 if you have an active trip. Outside of active trips, phone support is available from 8 AM – 11 PM, 7 days per week.
